Dr Niles Caulder has been contemplating the cycles of life. The Chief has led his team through good times and bad. He has always believed that endings, no matter how painful, give birth to new beginnings. But recently, something has shaken his confidence. A recurring dream robs him of sleep, leaving him weakened. It's so extraordinary that he decides to file an incident report. Why does the nightmare bother Niles Caulder so much? And what is his team doing while he draws inward? Let's leap into The Doom Patrol #1 and see!

Story

Once, the world needed them. They battled villains and saved the Earth from destruction. But now, Robotman, Elasti-Girl, and Negative Man are helping their neighbors. When they find Milo in the street, Negative Man is disheartened. He knows how much Ms Green will miss her companion. Robotman urges him not to get sentimental. It’s bad enough that they’ve been reduced to finding lost cats. But Elasti-Girl has a plan. She may not be doing something important. Still, she can make an aging, lonely woman happy.

While The Doom Patrol #1 provides a glimpse inside the Chief’s psyche, it also covers the team’s desperate attempt to get through another dreary day. With the team on the wane, Robotman and Elasti-Girl recall the incidents that shipwrecked their earlier careers. Negative Man wants to take comfort in all their victories. Yet even he wonders if the team that gave them a second shot at life has outlived its usefulness.

In Darcy Van Poelgeest’s story, Robotman and Elasti-Girl need a reason to keep going. Life may have dealt them another failure. Still, Elasti-Girl has a plan to reverse their fortunes. But Negative Man quietly disagrees with his friends. Unless he is going into battle, Negative Man cannot reveal the truth about who he is for fear of hurting others. And he’s tired of hiding.

His team may be at a crossroads. His boss may be withdrawing due to lack of sleep. Still, Negative Man wants to face the facts. If these are his team’s final days, he wants to go out by recognizing the situation for what it is, instead of what he’d like it to be, in The Doom Patrol #1.

Art

As Niles sits at his desk, a framed photo shows him with Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Robotman in happier times. Yet, no smile relaxes his taut features. The cloaked girl who appears before Niles lacks his blemishes and wrinkles. After his stony features transform into shock, an overhead view reveals Niles sprawled on a white background. But in the street, an upshot shows the team looking down at a corpse. While they may be in the cat rescue business, Elasti-Girl has a bag ready. Still, when she holds it out for Robotman, she looks away as he drops the still body in the bag.

While Niko Henrichon adorns Niles’ office with brown and green, Negative Man’s red tie links him with Elasti-Girl’s dress in The Doom Patrol #1. The yellow sky hangs over Robotman’s yellow body as he contemplates another losing situation. Yet the sky turns white as they travel in their throwback van adorned with fall colors. The remaining orange leaves cling to the mostly bare trees as the team pursues its plan. Yet Ms Green's green earrings and skirt link with Negative Man's memory of his team as he decides how best to resolve the situation.

Lucas Gattoni fills white balloons with black uppercase letters. The dialogue shrinks for lowered voices, grows bold for intonation, and swells with raised volume in balloon shapes that differentiate the teammates. While the narration fills beige boxes in Act One, yellow boxes adorn Act Two, before transforming to light indigo boxes in Act Three. After Niles’ clacking typewriter fills the air of his study, the team pursues its mission despite animal sounds, knocking, and a cry for help. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Through their ups and downs, Niles Calder has insisted that Robotman, Elasti-Girl, and Negative Man remain by his side. Yet, as the Chief struggles with haunting dreams, the team wonders if the cycles that turn losses into new opportunities are winding down in The Doom Patrol #1.

Clark Kent has labored over his writing samples. So, when the editor says that his timing is off, Clark mentions the writers and artists who have shaped his prose. Sadly, his interviewer is referring to the new owners. He believes they'll want to cut staff, rather than increasing their investment by hiring greenhorns.

Clark has pinned his hopes on getting a job in journalism. Can he convince the boss to take him on? And why has Clark sacrificed everything to fulfill his dream of being a reporter? Let's leap into Superman: The Stranger #1 and see!

Story

After leaving the office, Clark ponders the necessity of money as he walks home. Lacking a safety net, Clark must earn enough to pay his bills. The editor's concession won't cut it. Still, at least it's a step inside the doors of an institution that could help him fulfill his dream.

The newspaper editor may not be overwhelmed with the style of Clark's prose. Still, as Superman: The Stranger #1 follows Clark through the rhythms of his day, the aspiring reporter ponders the big questions. Clark’s thoughts flow in a conversational tone as he struggles to make sense of his life. Clark may have corrected the editor’s mispronunciation of his name. Still, Clark's musings on society and the role he will play evoke those of a philosopher.

In Wes Craig’s story, Clark doesn’t just want to get paid for his work. He also yearns for someone to understand him. Instead of talking with a friend, Clark bares his soul to his journal. He writes to someone he once knew. Perhaps he imagined a future with this person. Instead, life has parted them. Yet Clark doesn’t just muse on the meaning of his existence or dwell on absent friends. At night, he ventures out to try to make his city a better place to live.

While Clark is isolated from his heritage, another character knows where he belongs. He may not possess Clark’s athletic abilities. Still, he has superpowers of another kind. And as Clark strives to demonstrate and master his abilities, this man quietly builds an empire in Superman: The Stranger #1.

Art

Light streams through the windows of the writers' room. It backlights the interviewer as his cigar glows. Smoke fills the room as the editor tries to let Clark down easily. Yet smoke forms clouds and airborne streams blown by the wind in the growing city. As Clark walks home, buses, automobiles, delivery trucks, and horse-drawn carriages share the streets. Smoke rises from the vehicles as children play, a newspaper hawker shouts the headlines, and the occasional passerby pauses to listen to a soapbox preacher. A bunch of bananas seems like an exotic touch as a shopkeeper stands behind a counter, framed by a scale and a cash register.

As Wes Craig conjures a bygone era, Jason Wordie adorns Superman: The Stranger #1 with a limited palette. Clark wears green as he makes his pitch. Yellow light slants through the windows as the editor considers letting his staff go. Metropolis, filled with construction crews and unfinished buildings, glows with yellow, orange, and brownish red. As Clark writes in his orange-bound journal, the fading sunlight makes the drapes in his room glow orange. Yet, when night falls, green returns to demonstrate Clark's ethics, even as he ponders what his role in life will be.

Black uppercase dialogue fills white balloons as two men attempt to forge their destinies. Lowercase letters in white gutters reveal Clark's thoughts. Yet the lowercase letters fill yellow narrative boxes when darkness falls, and Clark attempts to make an impact on his world. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

It’s tough to get by in the big city. While Clark Kent uses his new abilities to protect others, he understands what drives many of the criminals. It’s a feeling he shares. Yet Clark hungers for far more than his next meal in Superman: The Stranger #1.

Conan The Barbarian #34 Review

Conan The Barbarian #34 Review

Writer: Jim Zub

Artist: Fernando Dagnino

Colorist: Diego Rodriguez

Letterer: Richard Starkings & Tyler Smith

Cover Artists: Esad Ribic, Jesus Merino, Nicola Scott & Juan Alberto Hernandez

Editor: Chris Butera

Publisher: Titan Comics

Price: $4.99

Release Date: August 26, 2026

The Zingaran Navy threatened the Red Brotherhood with extinction. Instead, it gave them sport and booty. But a battle amid a raging storm took everything Conan and Valeria had and more. Despite surviving the wind-tossed seas, Conan has more on his mind than the Zingarans' new War on Piracy. During the night, the Cimmerian faced a phantom with red eyes who slew Captain Quinn's First Mate and knocked him unconscious.

As they drop anchor at an unknown island, will the crew find the resources they need to repair their damaged vessel? And what forces molded skeletons and stone into a haunting monument? Let’s shout, “Hail Crom,” leap into Conan The Barbarian #34, and see!

Story

With Conan and Valeria's help, Captain Quinn steered the Briney Wren through the raging storm. But as the ship lists and salt water invades its battered timbers, the sailors realize it has seen its last voyage. Captain Quinn is no stranger to surviving disaster. So, he organizes the crew to salvage what they can, lower the boats, and make for land.

The obelisk along the shore casts a dire warning. Yet each sailor realizes that the loot they took from other vessels cannot help them on this island. Closer to nature than his city-bred companions, Conan wants to scout the land for food, water, and enemies. But after losing his First Mate and the Briney Wren, Captain Quinn wants his remaining crew to stick together. So, although he realizes it exposes everyone to more danger, the Cimmerian accompanies the party as they survey the island together in Conan The Barbarian #34.

Before the cataclysm that ended Kull’s Thurian Age, this island might have been charted, and its dangers known. But as Captain Quinn and his company survey this forbidding island, they witness wonders unknown in an age when knowledge is hoarded or lost instead of shared. While the fiercest fighters like Conan and Valeria seem best suited for the dangers they face, a sailor who makes light of everything demonstrates surprising survival skills in Conan The Barbarian #34.

Art

As their ship sinks, its masts bow toward the monolith ashore. The cargo Captain Quinn ordered his crew to batten down now floats near the wrecked vessel. As they bid farewell to the Briney Wren, Conan stands taller than all his companions save Captain Quinn. Then, as they climb the grassy slope toward ferns and trees, Conan takes the lead, while a wary Valeria follows, yet also lingers.

Fernando Dagnino combines eye-catching set pieces with inset panels to heighten tension and convey action. Unlike Quinn's extravagant appearance and Morley's posturing, Conan never demands the spotlight. Yet when danger threatens, Captain Quinn lurks in the background while Conan raises a hand to block the blinding light. Diego Rodriguez adorns Conan The Barbarian #34 with a loaded palette that accentuates the mystery and majesty of Jim Zub’s story. Yet when yellow and orange emphasize a character’s features, Conan remembers the wraith with glowing red eyes that he battled amid the storm.

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith fill white dialogue balloons with black uppercase text as the survivors seek food, water, and shelter after losing their plunder. The words grow bold for intonation, broken balloon borders suggest lowered voices, and letters swell as people die. Yellow narrative boxes accompany readers on this trek through an unknown island. A red balloon border accompanies a shouted warning. Yet, red dialogue spells doom for the crew of the Briney Wren. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

When she roused him on the storm-battered deck of the Briney Wren, Valeria intended to drag Conan into the hold. But when he insisted on standing by Captain Quinn, she followed his lead, trusting Conan's instincts more than her own. Now, as they explore a forgotten island filled with danger at every turn, Valeria learns why so few of the Cimmerian's fellow thieves, mercenaries, and freebooters survive to tell tales of their adventures in Conan The Barbarian #34.
