The Girl Who Draws On Whales GN Review

Writer & Artist: Ariela Kristantina

Colorist: Sarah Stern

Letterer: Bernardo Brice

Designer: Kassandra Starkell

Editor: Will Dennis

Publishers: Comixology & Dark Horse Books

Kindle Release Date: September 23, 2025

Kindle Price: Free with an Amazon Prime membership

Paperback Price: $17.99

Paperback Release Date: March 31, 2026

Like a pier jutting over the water, Wangi's town perches on stilts. When the whales arrive each year, the girl abandons her hammock and dives into the sea. The whales swim around this cluster of homes that represents Wangi's world. Yet each whale dwarfs this small enclave of Humanity.

Despite the village elder's fears, the whales regard their Human neighbors peacefully. Maaha, the pod's leader, even lets Wangi fingerpaint on him. As Wangi adorns Maaha with art, the girl speaks with Maaha, and the pod leader responds. What stories about life do Maaha and Wangi share? And how will Wangi's love for whales affect her future? Let’s grab our art supplies, leap into The Girl Who Draws On Whales GN, and see!

Story

The village elder reads the tides and the sky. She has safeguarded her community for decades. But while everyone else sees happiness, the elder worries that the whales will bring trouble to her people. After the whales depart, she breathes easier for a while. But when Maaha returns without the pod, its injuries bode ill. As Wangi directs the villagers to tend Maaha's wounds, the elder’s fears grow.

In The Girl Who Draws On Whales GN, the elder cannot repress Wangi’s compassion. Nor can she quench the girl’s curiosity. As Wangi tends Maaha's wounds, she discovers that not all the art on its body has come from her hand. So, when Maaha departs, Wangi climbs into a boat to find her.

Ariela Kristantina's story introduces a cast of colorful characters. Like the elder, Wangi's younger brother Banyu urges restraint. But Wangi is up for anything and eager to explore her world. When she meets Citra and his people, some are less friendly than others. But like her, the young mapmaker has the heart of an explorer.

As Wangi travels, she meets more people like herself, learns about the history of her world, and beholds wonders she never imagined. Sadly, Wangi also discovers that the village elder’s concerns were warranted. The Girl Who Draws On Whales GN is a story of Human greed and the desire to destroy what you cannot control. Yet the book also celebrates love, family, adventure, and the beauty of nature.

Art

Bridges and piers link the islands upon which Wangi’s people have built their homes. Wangi braids her red hair in front. The rest tumbles around her, as uncontrollable as the ocean waves. While other islanders strain to remain in their boats when Maaha rises like a mountain, Wangi perches atop the whale and waves to them. Mythological creatures frolic on the page as Wangi draws on Maaha's hide. The children of the village swim beneath the waves to behold the illustrated whale in The Girl Who Draws On Whales GN.

Sarah Stern loads her brush with a soft and inviting palette of colors as she paints Ariela Kristantina’s charming illustrations. Bubbles rise through the turquoise waters as Wangi paints the gray whale with red, yellow, and blue. Citra's green hair evokes Peter Pan as he sits at his desk surrounded by books, charts, and a globe. His purple shirt links with the sky above him, while his maroon chair resonates with the wooden trim of his elegant ship. As green plants adorn Wangi's wood and reed home, metal spikes rise from the captain's jacket as he gazes at the pink clouds floating through a peach sky.

Bernardo Brice fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters and lowercase letters in dark yellow paper scraps. As Wangi lies on the injured whale, Maaha speaks white uppercase letters into a black rectangle. While Humans splash in the water, knock on their neighbor's door, and activate alarms, the sea creatures' telepathic communication appears as white uppercase letters surrounded by black. Thanks to Comixology, Dark Horse Books, and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Citra is a young mapmaker. He owes everything to the man who raised him. The boy narrates this tale about Wangi’s adventure in his own inimitable style. Yet whether Wangi can trust this stranger who also draws on whales is anything but certain in The Girl Who Draws On Whales GN.

The Girl Who Draws on Whales

Writer & Artist: Ariela Kristantina

Colorist: Sarah Stern

Letterer: Bernardo Brice

The highly anticipated original graphic novel, The Girl Who Draws on Whales, written and illustrated by Ariela Kristantina, the artist of the Eisner award-nominated original graphic novel Adora and the Distance written by Marc Bernardin, arrives digitally on September 23, 2025, from Comixology Originals, Amazon’s exclusive digital content line and in print from Dark Horse Books on March 31, 2026.

In The Girl Who Draws on Whales, Kristantina takes readers on a powerful and atmospheric journey through a lush island environment inspired by her homeland of Indonesia. With soft and inspiring colors by Sarah Stern, letters by Bernardo Brice, and edits by Will Dennis, The Girl Who Draws on Whales is a captivating and visually stunning story of exploration and discovery. This epic YA adventure marks the first-ever graphic novel that Kristantina has both written and illustrated.

Blending Southeast Asian folklore with themes of colonization and the unshakable power of art and storytelling, The Girl Who Draws on Whales is a coming-of-age story about resistance, siblinghood, and believing in your voice—even when no one else does.

“This story is about trust. About believing in yourself. About what happens when no one else does, except the one person who always will,” says Ariela Kristantina.

Siblings Wangi and her younger brother Banyu live in a sea-village in a post-apocalyptic world, centuries after The Great Flood changed the face of the world. Wangi shares a mysterious bond with the whales that visit their waters and they allow her to draw on their backs. One day a whale arrives alone, wounded and adorned with strange new markings that seem to carry messages from other lost settlements. Wangi believes it’s a call for help. No one listens—except Banyu.

Motivated by this mystery, Wangi vows to investigate. Although forbidden by their parents and the village elders, Wangi and Banyu embark on a wondrous sea journey into the unknown, only to stumble into a much larger fight: one that pits ancient sea magic against a volcanic empire fueled by war, greed, and conquest. Together, they must fight to save their home in The New World.

The Girl Who Draws on Whales is a testimony to the power of stories—their uncanny ability to entertain, educate and, ultimately, unite us.

About Ariela Kristantina: Kristantina is an artist from Jakarta, Indonesia. Since her debut in 2014, she's best known for her work on InSeXts, Mata Hari, Deep State, and The Logan Legacy. She has contributed covers and illustrations to a range of companies including Image, DC Comics, Top Cow, Vault and more. Kristantina is the artist of the 2022 Eisner award-nominated original graphic novel Adora and the Distance which she co-created with Marc Bernardin. The Girl Who Draws on Whales is the first YA graphic novel she has written and drawn.

Dark Horse Comics and Lucasfilm Announce The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope—The Manga

Dark Horse Comics’ First Ever Kickstarter Will Feature Limited Edition Kickstarter Tiers and Collectibles, Ahead of a Traditional Release in Comic Shops and Bookstores in 2026

As part of Star Wars Celebration, Dark Horse Comics is announcing that they will publish The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope—The Manga. Two stunning volumes will each be available wherever books are sold, and will spotlight Hisao Tamaki’s original art from his acclaimed 1997 manga adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope and include a new English translation. Ahead of retail launch in Summer 2026, Dark Horse Comics will also be offering special editions through the publisher’s first ever Kickstarter campaign. This beautifully drawn manga will be available through Kickstarter in two distinct editions, each offering a unique way to experience this extraordinary adaptation.  The Collector’s Edition features the same two-volume hardcovers that will be available at retail but with Kickstarter exclusive covers. The Masterpiece Edition will faithfully reproduce Tamaki’s art at its original size in two volumes and include an auxiliary volume. The Masterpiece Edition format will be exclusively available through Kickstarter. Fans can now follow the prelaunch page for the Kickstarter page.

In 1977, the world was changed by the release of George Lucas’s seminal space fantasy epic. Fascinating characters, groundbreaking special effects, and breathtaking action affected audiences in ways that movies never had before and seldom have since. Twenty years later, Hisao Tamaki adapted the films in his own singular style that allowed legions of Star Wars fans to enjoy their favorite story in an exciting new way. It was later published internationally in English by Dark Horse Comics, winning the 1999 Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material to confirm Tamaki’s reputation among manga and Star Wars fans alike. Now, Dark Horse has meticulously scanned and assembled Tamaki-sensei’s  original art boards to chronicle and showcase the creation of a unique artifact of popular culture.

“The editor in charge of the project…asked, “Would you like to draw Star Wars?” and without hesitation or second thought, I responded, “A New Hope? Absolutely!” said Hisao Tamaki. “I have to draw Star Wars.”

These deluxe Kickstarter-exclusive sets offer fans an opportunity to revisit the classic adventure through new eyes and in a fresh voice. A standard edition of The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope—The Manga will be released in comic shops and bookstores in 2026. Join Dark Horse and Lucasfilm to explore the creative journey of a novel view of a galaxy far, far away.

It's interesting that Lucasfilm commissioned this manga not in 1977, but when they enhanced the original films and released the original trilogy as Special Editions. The world finally got to see Han Solo speak with Jabba The Hutt for the first time! Plus, we got to see Stormtroopers riding Dewbacks! I especially liked the drones flying around Mos Eisley! I never expected those!

Now, let's take a look inside:

About Hisao Tamaki

Born in 1964 in Niigata, Hisao Tamaki is a Japanese manga artist best known for his adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope, originally published in Japan in 1997. He grew up immersed in tokusatsu, anime, and sci-fi, with Ultraman, Space Battleship Yamato, and Star Wars shaping his artistic passion.

Tamaki began drawing manga in childhood and later honed his skills in Tokyo under Akira Sakuma and Atsuji Yamamoto. He worked as an assistant on Yamamoto’s Elf 17, a manga which was serialized in Hakusensha’s Monthly Comicomi, the same magazine that ran Kentaro Miura’s first Berserk story, a one-shot today known as “Berserk: The Prototype.” Part of the same generation of aspiring young manga creators, in the summer of 1985 Tamaki and Miura were also both entrants in Kodansha’s 34th semiannual Shonen Magazine Newcomer Award contest. Tamaki recalls with pride that he won second place—for first place went to Kentaro Miura.

Tamaki's adaptation of A New Hope was a meticulous recreation of the film, earning praise for its dynamic storytelling. It was later published internationally in English by Dark Horse Comics; its 1999 win of the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material confirmed his reputation among manga and Star Wars fans alike.

Christmas 365 #2 Review

Writers: Mikey Way & Jonathan Rivera

Artist: Piotr Kowalski

Colorist: Brad Simpson

Letterer: Joshua Reed

Cover Artists: Piotr Kowalski with Brad Simpson

Special Thanks: Ian Sattler

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Price: $3.99

Release Date: January 8, 2025

Peter Rockwell was depressed. Overworked and mourning his father, every day was a struggle to get by. Without Peter at the helm, his family started to mutiny. Peter's relationship with his eldest daughter grew frosty when he missed her play. But Santa Claus put him right. The Mall Santa (“A total pro”) suggested Peter “Live each day like it is Christmas.” Can Peter harness the joy of Christmas all year round? And how are the Rockwells celebrating Christmas on the 25th of each month? Let's grab a glass of eggnog, leap into Christmas 365 #2, and find out!

Story

The Doctor isn't fond of Peter's plan. Burning down the Christmas tree was just the start. Peter's over-the-top celebrations bring unexpected dangers. The Doctor also worries about Peter's cholesterol due to all the holiday yummies. Nor is the Doctor alone. Red may look good on Santa, but the bank isn't happy with Peter's overspending. Still, after five months, Peter is achieving his goal of bringing his family together. So, Peter wonders how he can make his Christmas Year more feasible.

Avoiding holiday overeating is hard. Creation and innovation entail danger. So, in Christmas 365 #2, Peter focuses on making the holidays more affordable. People are noticing what the Rockwells are doing. When the family gathers around a plate of holiday cookies, Tina's suggestion inspires Peter. Building a Memorial Day Christmas Village necessitates a significant investment in their time and finances. If their online fans don’t support them, the Rockwells could go bankrupt. But like Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella, Peter suspects that if he builds it, people will come.

Amid all the fun and celebrations, Mikey Way and Jonathan Rivera’s story showcases Peter’s love for his family. As Alice said, Steven, Susan, and Tina are the gifts that matter. Steven no longer torments Susan with gory visions on his tablet. Tina is channeling her social media prowess and her set design skills to bolster her father's plans. As Peter's eldest daughter starts to feel the joy of Christmas, she realizes this year of celebrating won't go on forever. While his father's death still haunts him, Peter finds ways to close the distance with his eldest daughter in Christmas 365 #2.

Art

Peter's waist looks thicker without his shirt on. Peter covers his face when he wonders how to Make Christmas Great Always. Piotr Kowalski’s

flashbacks reveal Steven's mischievous nature, the Rockwells' first four monthly celebrations, and possibly how Tina sought revenge on her father. After Brad Simpson colors the April celebrations red and imbues the family with green eyes, gingerbread men with red and green buttons gather next to bills with red late payment stickers. “No, not the gumdrop buttons!”

As Peter and Alice study Tina's phone, bold colors fill the background, hinting at the Rockwells' online coverage. Spectators watch festive holiday displays as Tina and greenbacks fill the foreground. While Alice looks worried, Peter brainstorms colorful building projects in his red long-sleeve shirt. Then a gray shark threatens to swallow Peter's red-clothed Christmas totem, men gather beneath red palm fronds, and customers smile when yellow fries rise from a brown bun.

Amid Piotr Kowalski's detailed art and Brad Simpson's vibrant coloring, Joshua Reed conveys Mikey Way and Jonathan Rivera's heartwarming and energetic story. The black uppercase letters in balloons and red-bordered boxes grow bold and swell but never shrink. A stylized red, green, and white logo adorns online articles in Christmas 365 #2. Snapping and thwipping signal injury. Chugging eases Alice's tensions. Yet barely discernable clicking endangers Peter's dream. Thanks to Dark Horse Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

Peter Rockwell's crusade to unite his family and celebrate their love for each other wins people over. But just as Peter discovers how to make Santa's suggestion profitable, someone threatens to steal his dream in Christmas 365 #2.

Pippin Dale enjoys her new job at the magical Maynard Hotel. She must pick things up quickly, as she is the sole bellhop on her second day. Despite her nonstop work, Pip keeps her eyes open. When she spots a cat burglar leaving a guest room, Pip’s pursuit ranges from the stairwell to the roof. Then, oops! Pip is hurtling toward the ground. Will Pip’s half-magical status help her survive? Or will someone else take the spotlight in James Robinson's story? Let's leap on our broomsticks, swoop into Welcome To The Maynard #2, and find out!

Story

Sam Flynn is briefing Margot Rathbone on the cat burglar investigation when Pip slams onto Margot’s desk. The Maynard’s manager tells Pip that portals surround the hotel for the guests' safety. When Pip explains she was pursuing the thief across the roof, Margot is impressed by her zeal in supporting Sam's investigation. But Pip is grateful to be working for Sam. The hotel detective has looked out for Pip since her mother died. Pip's mother worked at the Maynard, helping the orphan feel closer to the only parent she ever knew.

In Welcome To The Maynard #2, Pip learns more about Margot, her fellow bellhop Boots, and the bartender Raylene. She also discovers Sam is keeping secrets from her. Pip trusts her mentor, so she reluctantly accepts this. Still, Pip is the one who stands to lose the most in James Robinson’s story. While Margot is okay with Sam’s deception, Pip’s new friends may grow angry with her when they learn she has been spying on them.

The cat burglar disguises her voice and appearance. So, Pip and Sam try to guess her identity by understanding her motives. The investigation grows more difficult as the magical community converges on the Maynard for the Wizardry And Sundry Magical Feats Awards Gala. While Pip rushes off her feet, a grieving wizard reminds Pip what she stands to lose in Welcome To The Maynard #2.

Art

As Pip falls past a statue of a warrior with a sword and a winged helmet, a portal appears above the lawn and plants. Blimps and hot air balloons sail above a castle and buildings beyond the manager's expansive window. Statues grace the floor. Smaller creations fill shelves, evoking Finster’s miniature monsters in Bandora Palace. Sam rises to pick up Pip’s hat, and Margot circles her desk to smile at the gesturing bellhop. Wearing a gray suit and matching wide-brim hat, Sam rubs his square chin as he remembers learning from Pip’s grandfather. Pip crosses her arms over her chest as she discusses the case with Sam and Margot. But her body language is more relaxed when she pulls her brass and red luggage cart in Welcome To The Maynard #2.

Ian Herring fills J Bone’s whimsical art with vibrant characters, animals, and decorations that stand out from lightly colored backgrounds. The Maynard's rooftop garden and a public park soothe. What the snooty assistant manager lacks in his black tuxedo, he more than makes up for with his enormous nose. A man in white and green teleports into the lobby in a storm of doves. Pip smiles with an aging mage in a straw hat and gray suit. Yet she seems happiest while loading the luggage cart and talking with Boots amid the storm of activity in the ornate lobby.

Jim Campbell spell-casts black letters into white dialogue balloons and beige narrative boxes. A cloudy psychic communiqué fills the air with a vision of the assistant manager's face when Pip helps a ghost to its room. The letters occasionally embolden for intonation and turn gray for lowered voices instead of shrinking. But much more dialogue grows bold when a storm swirls through a guest room, filling panels gray and blue in Welcome To The Maynard #2. Thanks to Dark Horse Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

As Pip deceives her coworkers while pursuing an elusive cat burglar, she discovers a ticking timebomb at home. Welcome To The Maynard #2 tackles the difficulties of keeping secrets from loved ones while showing how power drives and alienates us from others.

While countries like China and Russia carve up Antarctica, someone builds a technological marvel on Earth’s southernmost continent. Those who stumble across it awaken far away, unable to recall their discovery. What is happening in this city of the future on the continent dedicated to scientific research? And how will advancements made there benefit our world? Let’s pull on our Lycra suits, leap into The Ambassadors Library Edition HC, and find out!

Story

Dr Choon-He Chung is serving a life sentence in the Cheongju Women's Correctional Institution. She wants to change that. Aided by Oksana Petrov, the South Korean scientist unlocks the Human condition. While building her Antarctic city, she develops a range of superpowers she can draw on. Now, all she lacks is freedom. That's where her knowledge of artificial intelligence comes in handy.

In The Ambassadors Library Edition HC, Choon-He Chung downloads her consciousness into a lookalike android. Then she announces a competition. Choon-He wants to share her discoveries with people around the world. She doesn't insist that they be bastions of morality. What matters most is a desire to help others and a willingness to represent their respective countries. Some work in lowly positions in society. Others profit from hurting others but vow to turn over a new leaf. Each of Dr Chung’s superheroes will enjoy health and long life. While doing good, they can borrow up to three superpowers at a time, relayed from Dr Chung's Antarctic stronghold.

Dr Chung’s actions threaten the countries that dominate our world. Her handful of superheroes can take on the armies of the superpowers, end wars, and protect countries from natural disasters. In Mark Millar's story, Choon-He's greatest threat is her ex-husband. Jin-Sung never loved her. Instead, he waited for the opportunity to capitalize on her discoveries by falsifying the evidence that imprisoned her.

While Dr Chung builds her superpowered version of Jeff Tracy’s International Rescue Corps, her ex-husband builds a team of billionaires. Jin-Sung’s recipients control the internet and the world media. After amassing fortunes, ruling the workforce, and influencing the masses, Jin-Sung’s billionaires want to further their legacies by living forever in The Ambassadors Library Edition HC.

Art

Mark Millar teamed with artists Frank Quitely, Karl Kerschl, Travis Charest, Olivier Coipel, Matteo Buffagni, and Matteo Scalera to capture panoramic shots like a plane flying over a domed city and a ship entering a Junk-filled Chinese harbor. Choon-He hovers above a stage while her assistant hobbles using a cane. Superheroes climb onto pogo stick-like supports to descend into a secret lair before roaring onto the streets in an exotic sportscar. Choon-He marvels as she watches orange and yellow-green fire streak through the evening sky, knowing the man flying like a bird (or a plane) used to need an oxygen tank to breathe.

Frank Quietly, Vincent MG Deighan, Michele Assarasakorn, Dave Stewart, Giovanna Niro & Lee Loughridge wield loaded palettes to convey gang wars in Rio De Janeiro, a rescue on a snow-covered mountain, and a man flying above a burning Australian village. They contrast these with scenes painted with limited colors in The Ambassadors Library Edition HC. People watch a red, blue, and yellow superhero on a screen in a grayscale viewing room. An organic gray spiral elevates glowing red letters circling a globe. Gray, beige, and tan fill the Oval Office as the President worries about the threats to the United States multiplying.

Clem Robins fills dialogue balloons and narrative boxes with uppercase black lettering that grows bold for inflection and enlarges for volume. Sound effects help us hear soldiers mowing down the opposition, villains making their bones, and an aggrieved ex-husband shattering furniture with a single blow. As superheroes bond over capturing a gang of thieves, we glimpse their takedowns through giant, colored sound effects. Biff! Pow! Smash! Should people who accomplish much win the most substantial prizes? Or are those who selflessly help others most worthy of power? One of history's prominent influencers claimed that those who doubled their investments (or talents) were most worthy of being entrusted with more. Then, he granted his followers eternal life regardless of their social status, wealth, or business acumen. The Ambassadors Library Edition HC ponders people's worthiness of receiving superpowers, the responsibility to represent their countries, and freedom from the limitations of age and disease.
