A thousand years from now, the United Planets are struggling. On Earth, R. J. Brande spearheaded efforts to help troubled planets remain in the union. Yet while the rich man sought to help stabilize the UP, he secretly researched a forbidden topic. In a galactic society where Super-Heroes are illegal, Brande sought to learn what he could about them. Yet on distant planets like Winath, young people like Garth yearn to use their unregistered superpowers to safeguard their societies.

His partner may wish Brainiac One of Five would stick to investigating paying jobs. Still, Tenzil helps his partner break into R. J. Brande’s office. Why does the United Planets fear unregistered Super-Heroes? And what did Brande hope to accomplish? Let’s lose any nearby Persuaders, leap into Legion of Super-Heroes #2, and see!

Story

After deactivating the robot guard and accessing Brande’s surveillance records, Brainiac learns who killed the United Planets Council member. Then the Persuaders arrive. The UP police don’t want anyone to know about R. J. Brande's secret and illegal obsession.

While Legion of Super-Heroes #2 follows Brainiac's search for the truth, the story checks in with Rokk Krinn and Imra. It also links the disgraced Magnoball player on Braal with the Princess of Titan. But the primary focus remains on how Brainiac and Tenzil’s investigation of R. J. Brande’s death links with Garth and Ayla’s reunion with their older brother. Mekt’s retelling of his recent adventures enthralls Garth. Yet his sister worries their older brother could damage their family's future.

Joshua Williamson’s story reveals the power factions that rule the struggling interstellar society. It also shows how the authorities rule their worlds with an iron hand. As a truly omnivorous Bismollian, Tenzil may hunger for the Persuaders’ armor. Yet Brainiac’s thirst for the truth antagonizes the people who control the narrative. When the private detectives and the Persuaders discover that Mekt killed R. J. Brande, both parties race across the galaxy to question him first. Yet what a telepathic princess on Saturn’s richest moon has discovered could be even more important than R. J. Brande’s repository of Super-Hero knowledge in Legion of Super-Heroes #2.

Art

Amid Earth's rounded towers, the circular Persuaders emblem adorns a cracked tablet. As circles or partial circles frame events on Earth, the Persuaders' masks bear a frown. The leader swoops through the sky on wings, while Princess Imra's jacket evokes feathers. Yet on Winath, diagonal lines and diamond patterns define pages as Mekt reunites with his siblings. On Braal, circular panels show glowing circles surrounding Rokk's hands. On Titan, symbols in white circles represent Princess Imra's psychic communication with her elders.

As Hayden Sherman weaves the tapestry of life across the United Planets, Tamra Bonvillain adorns Legion of Super-Heroes #2 with a vibrant palette. While Garth and Ayla wear blue and yellow, their red hair links them to their blonde brother’s red-and-green costume. As violet-and-indigo Rokk works on his orange world, Princess Imra walks past orange columns to behold her violet-and-indigo city. While the blue Persuaders seek to crush hope in unlicensed Super-Heroes, Brainiac One of Five's red-and-green skin links him with Mekt’s costume. Yet his violet-and-indigo clothes link him with Rokk Krinn and Princess Imra.

Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou fills white balloons with black uppercase letters. Intonation emboldens words. Lowercase letters convey lowered voices. Raised voices swell letters, change text color, and deform balloons. While Brainiac One of Five speaks white letters into red rectangles, the Persuaders speak black letters into light-blue boxes. Yellow letters with red outlines identify places, while violet words in white shapes interest one character. Yet as sound effects enhance the detectives' flight and aspiring Super-Heroes' fight, one non-Persuader's offscreen comment appears as black uppercase letters in a blue box. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

The United Planets struggle to govern so many solar systems. Anyone with superpowers must register with the authorities, and only the oppressive Persuaders can legally use them. Either R. J. Brande forgot that Super-Heroes nearly destroyed their society, or he began to question his government’s official history. Either way, now he's dead. And anyone he interacted with could become the Persuaders' next target in Legion of Super-Heroes #2.

Zod didn't ask for Ursa's older self to appear and validate Jor-El's prophecies of doom and gloom. But when he saw Supergirl and young Superboy bearing the symbol of the House of El, Zod realized that his enemy was right. When they arrived on Earth and Superman welcomed him as a friend, Zod wanted to pool their resources to save Krypton. But after losing his way in the time stream while trying to correct Darkseid’s damage to the future, Superman asserted that attempting such a monumental change to the past could do incalculable damage to the present.

Zod is used to destroying anyone who doesn’t fall into line. But can Superman and Zod forge a compromise? Or will Zod and Superman confirm Presidente Eduardo Castilho’s fear that the war isn’t over, and El Caldero has become a battleground for aliens? Let’s leap over tall buildings into Superman: Kingdom Of Zod Special #1 and see!

Story

Young Zod may not want to fight. But Ursa's revelations have robbed him of hope for the future. So, when Superman refuses to help him establish a Kryptonian Kingdom on Earth, Zod has nothing to live for unless he goes to war against Superman’s forces and wins. Yet while young Zod’s goals align with his deceased older self, Ursa’s back is also against the wall. The experiment on New Kandor proves that Zod’s goals are misguided. Krypton can never be replicated. Nor can it be improved upon. The only way to preserve everything she treasures is to destroy the timeline by saving her home world.

While Superman: Kingdom of Zod Special #1 covers the battle over Earth and Krypton, Joshua Williamson begins his story in the past. Clark Kent and Lois have relocated to Hamilton County to raise Jon while preserving their secret identities. Yet, while advising him to use his powers responsibly, Jon asks his father if he has done anything he later regretted.

As Superman and his forces seek to resolve the conflict in El Caldero, Joshua Williamson, Mark Waid, Dan Slott, and Sophie Campbell also show the fallout of their actions. Superman has many regrets. While his choices regarding Zod weigh on him, he also realizes that he abandoned his responsibilities as the leader of the House of El on Earth. Zod’s actions in El Caldero, and Superboy-Prime’s actions in Metropolis, may have profound implications for the Super-family. Superman is on the back foot and needs to catch up on everything he has missed. Yet as Superman recognizes that he must adapt to unexpected changes in his family, another leader renews familial ties in Superman: Kingdom of Zod Special #1.

Art

In a flashback from Jon’s childhood, Clark leans forward as he expresses his anger at his son’s irresponsible actions. Then he relaxes and smiles when Jon’s response reminds him of his youth. Clark sits on the bed beside his son, still leaning forward, as he tries to warn him of the potential dangers of his actions. Yet he turns away and stands with his back to Jon, staring into the sky, as he remembers a decision that weighs on his soul. Clark’s memory fills the background in Jon’s bedroom, bridging the earlier conflict with a double-page spread of their present. As the war between the Super-family and younger Zod's forces proves more intense than earlier battles, Steel and his niece battle Zod’s ground forces. While the battle rages around them, Princess Shark yearns to help Lena Luthor.

As Paolo Villanelli, Sophie Campbell, David Messina, Rachael Stott, and Bruno Frenda chart the chaos and aftermath in El Caldero, they also follow the Super-family when it disperses. Arif Prianto, Tamra Bonvillain, Ivan Plascensia, Giuliano Peratelli, and Luis Guerrero adorn Superman: Kingdom of Zod Special #1 with a series of lavish palettes. Violet and indigo link Zod’s forces with Kara’s future. While an outsider in the Super-family, Superboy-Prime’s gray armor bridges the gap with the Steelworks team. Zod's dark gray uniform suggests the dangers of trying to resurrect the past. But Ursa's black outfit symbolizes that rejecting the present bodes ill for the future.

While Josh Reed fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters, Kara’s thoughts fill puffy clouds. The letters grow bold with intonation, shrink with lowered voices, and enlarge for raised voices. Yet dialogue in a white star suggests another decision that will haunt Superman forever. Sound effects accompany Booster Gold’s attempt to atone for his mistakes and Lena’s race to find a solution to the chaos. Yet Nightflame’s green dialogue balloons link with Zod’s schemes in El Caldero, and another character’s plans for the Super-family. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Every responsible parent wants the best for their family. Likewise, responsible leaders want the best for those they serve. Yet, both must recognize when it's time to step aside and let others choose their paths. As Superman struggles to deal with the changes that occurred during his absence, Booster Gold must accept responsibility for his actions with young Clark. In the aftermath of El Caldero, new dangers arise to threaten the Super-family's future in Superman: Kingdom of Zod Special #1.

After traveling through time to repair the damage Darkseid did to the future, Superman returned to find Earth drastically changed. Saving the Earth necessitated further changes. His son, Jon, now calls himself Tomorrow Man. Clark Kent's childhood friend, Lana Lang, no longer wields superpowers. As for Presidente Eduardo Castilho, his beloved kingdom of El Caldero is no longer an economic powerhouse.

Although he doesn't realize it, Superman's troubles are far from over. A younger version of Dru-Zod is traveling to Earth. He holds Superman's cousin and his younger self hostage. And this Zod is more ambitious and armed with Ursa's knowledge of the future. Can Kal-El and Kara Zor-El's Super Force defend Earth against Zod and Ursa? And, with the aid of Booster Gold's Time Bubble, can Superman find a way to preserve his homeworld? Let’s leap into Superman #42 and see what happens!

Story

Good news travels fast. While heroes in orbit realize that Zod’s weaponized Green-K has lost its sting, superheroes in El Caldero discover they can turn the tables on their oppressors. Amid the celebrations, those imprisoned or separated during the fighting enjoy reunions. Yet Martian Manhunter confirms Jon Kent’s assertion that young Clark and Kara are no longer in El Caldero.

Superman may not be the world's greatest detective. Still, Clark Kent must piece together what happened to Supergirl, his younger self, and General Zod in Superman #42. Lena Luthor's inventions failed to protect the Super Force as she had hoped. So, she's anxious to help. But while Superman investigates, Presidente Eduardo Castilho struggles to come to grips with his failure. He believed he had the stranglehold on the most valuable resource on Earth. Instead, Zod used his gift from the stars to attack the rest of the world. Then the man who gave Eduardo the means to protect El Caldero took it away.

As everyone adapts to the new normal, they must decide how to resume their lives in Joshua Williamson's story. But once again, the question of Krypton looms. While Dru-Zod uplifted El Caldero to transform Earth into a new Krypton, Booster Gold's Time Bubble gave Ursa and Zod the potential to save Krypton. No one wants Krypton to die. But Zod and Ursa are perfectly willing to destroy everything and everyone in their way to get what they want in Superman #42.

Art

While Red Tornado watches events on monitors in the Justice League Watchtower, the inert El Calderan Green-K continues to aerosolize. Rectangular panels portray the captives locked in their cells in the Kryptonite Castle. Yet when Princess Shark barrels through the translucent barrier, the panels resemble shards. A splash page of Superman confirms the prisoners' suspicions. But nothing heralds the return of normality like superheroes filling the skies above El Caldero.

As Eddy Barrows, Eduardo Pansica, Eber Ferreira, and Júlio Ferreira showcase Superman’s search for young Clark, Supergirl, and Zod, Ulises Arreola fills Superman #42 with a vibrant and nuanced palette. Green dominates backgrounds and tinges scenes as Zod's Green-K continues to lose color. The gold surrounding Superman's attempt to free the imprisoned evokes the streaks of light that filled the skies across the globe.

While the Krypto-Knights' armor foretells the violet and indigo of the time stream, Princess Shark’s attire remains violet as she frees captives, protects civilians, and assists with the cleanup. Conner Kent and Superboy-Prime have struggled to get along. Yet, their red, gold, and dark blue costumes underline their evolving relationship. Still, as Presidente Eduardo Castilho confronts the future dressed in red and yellow, his former source of wealth echoes Lois Lane’s blue slacks and white shirt.

White letters with blue outlines identify locations, while black and colored uppercase words fill white balloons. Uppercase letters in colored narrative boxes convey offscreen dialogue. Princess Shark and Zod speak forcefully with dark letters in white balloons outlined in red. Giant dialogue accompanies a cry for help. Still, sound effects enhance the fight to free the imprisoned, an arrival that forces Superman to make difficult choices, and a battle to save billions. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Ursa has seen too many failures. Young Zod is ambitious and unused to failure. Superman wants everyone to be healthy and happy. Still, he must decide if he's willing to compromise for the good of all in Superman #42.

When Superman disappeared after the Omega Tournament, Superboy-Prime stood up and did the right thing. At least, he tried. Still, C.K. knows he's no replacement for Superman.

C.K. loves the DC Comics Prime Universe more than "the real world" because it has a Superman. Yet, along with villains like Manchester Black, the DC Comics Prime Universe also has General Zod. So, when Supergirl comes calling, Superboy-Prime and the Super Force travel to El Caldero to prevent Zod from destroying Superman's world.

Can C.K.'s heritage in "the real world" help him withstand Zod's weaponized Kryptonite? And after the trip through time that drained him, can Superman summon the strength to battle one of his greatest enemies? Let’s leap into Superman #41 and see!

Story

On the Watchtower, Red Tornado and the Atom watch as El Calderan Kryptonite spreads its deadly effects across the Earth. While they wonder how Zod has weaponized the Kryptonite to attack Humanity, a Kryptonian leads the Justice League's efforts to contain it. Still, Red Tornado and the Atom realize that if Steel's scientific team cannot produce an antidote, their best hope is for Kara's team to force Zod to defuse his biochemical weapon. But since both teams arrived in El Caldero, the Watchtower has been unable to observe events in Zod's kingdom.

Even though they don't realize that Superman is in El Caldero, Red Tornado and the Atom recognize the validity of a two-pronged approach to resolving the Green-K disaster. Yet as he battles Superman, Zod insists these two approaches to problem-solving will always conflict. As he traveled toward Earth aboard the prison frigate, weakened after the destruction of New Kandor, Zod imagined Jor-El taunting him. The scientist insisted that the General’s insatiable need to conquer his enemies had left him with nothing once again. So while battling Jor-El’s son and pursuing his plans for Earth, Zod insists on seeing anyone who opposes him as his enemy.

Joshua Williamson's story contrasts the characters' desire to conquer and rebuild with working to preserve what they have. Just as Red Tornado takes comfort in his belief that Superman isn't in El Caldero, love and caring play a role. Yet while Zod attempts to have everything his way, Superman's act of kindness to Young Clark could prove equally destructive to Earth in Superman #41.

Art

As Zod recovers, he imagines himself confronting Jor-El. While the scientist addresses him with his hands behind his back, Zod hurls off his cloak, extends his arms, and leaps toward Jor-El. When Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira show Zod fighting Kal-El in El Caldero surrounded by Kryptonite crystals, smoke plumes rise amid the towers that his Green-K has funded. As the two men in armor fight, Kal-El's face shows through his visor, while the lights glowing on Zod's mask evoke another being responsible for Krypton's destruction. Yet when Zod and Kal-El remove their facial coverings, their dark hair and beards emphasize their shared heritage.

While Zod wore a red cloak in his nightmare, Jor-El wore a green tunic. As Ulises Arreola colors their battle in the overwhelmingly green El Caldero, Superman wears indigo mech armor, while Zod protects himself in black and violet. Still, when Kal-El makes Zod as mad as Jor-El did, the two opponents appear as red silhouettes in a black panel. Orange accompanies Zod's desire to obtain more than he has, while Young Clark and Kara's blue costumes symbolize hope for the world.

The characters’ black uppercase dialogue appears in white balloons and colored narrative boxes. Despite losing her ability to recharge beneath a yellow sun, Lois Lane’s off-camera dialogue appears in a yellow box adorned with the Superwoman symbol. Eradicator retells history with white uppercase dialogue in black boxes, while Eradicatrix addresses the current situation with white letters in black balloons. Ariana Maher’s sound effects enhance the battles and drama in the vibrantly colored Superman #41. Yet shrunken letters in cloudlike balloons with wavering arrows suggest that some people confuse caring for others with weakness. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Eduardo Castilho hailed Superman as a friend when he gave El Caldero the ability to become an economic powerhouse. Yet he labeled Superman an enemy when Superman wanted the Sun Crystal. But after Castilho cast out his greatest protector, Zod emerged to claim El Caldero for himself.

Now, as General Zod uses what Castilho built to reshape the Earth to his liking, someone else sees what Zod has achieved and senses an opportunity for an even greater prize in Superman #41.
