I discovered Frank Herbert's novel Dune in the early 1980s. Like JRR Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, it opened an entirely different world to me. Dune was a visionary novel, with an impressive sweep, and more on the level of The Lord of the Rings than anything else I had ever read. In the late '80s and early '90s, I read Herbert's six volume series and Tolkien's Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings every year.
One aspect of Herbert's novels that intrigued me was the Ornthopters. Along with stillsuits, lasguns, and personal shields, they imbued his future world with reality. Now, you can purchase your very own Ornithopter. You may not be able to fly it between Arrakeen Palace and Stilgar's sietch, but it can transport your imagination to Arrakis and beyond.
