Lenore lives in the small town of Nevermore. Ragamuffin is a stuffed doll with the undead soul of a vampire. Pooty is a bucket-headed demon with a pitchfork. A psychotic Pickle Hat trapped them in Lenore’s mansion four years ago. Lenore may be an undead girl, but even she gets hungry sometimes. And as everyone knows, hunger makes you irritable. Can Lenore and her friends escape the psychotic Pickle Hat? And how might their actions affect Humanity? Let’s slip on our time rings, leap into Lenore: The Time War HC, and see!

Story

Lenore doesn’t want to kill her cute Pickle Hat. Yet she’s hungry and miserable. Pooty is a demon. Still, he cares for his undead friend. But when Pooty announces his decision to kill the Pickle Hat, Lenore forgets her misery and pleads for the Pickle Hat's life. Then a strange thing happens. Time Goats appear in Lenore’s mansion. They take Lenore’s side and urge Pooty not to kill the Pickle Hat. But when Lenore’s hunger overwhelms her, she kills the Time Goats and shares the roasted meat with her friends.

In Lenore: The Time War HC, Lenore and her friends leave the mansion as abruptly as the Time Goats appeared. Pooty makes a new life in ancient Rome. Ragamuffin adapts to life in the Cretaceous Period. Lenore appears in space and joins a cosmic choir. Who knew tasty tenderloins could transport you like the TARDIS?

Roman Dirge’s story scatters the three friends across time and space. Pooty finds wealth and acclaim as a gladiator. Ragamuffin joins a band of Velociraptors and takes down plant-eating dinosaurs. Both are miserable. Ironically, Lenore finds harmony with her new friends. She never grows bored, hungry, or yearns to kill anyone. The undead girl who seeks constant distraction has finally found peace.

Sadly, nothing lasts forever. After six years, Lenore wonders why the choir sings. As curiosity often provokes change, Lenore goes on an adventure across space and time. But when Lenore and her friends reunite, the Time Goat society that monitors the stability of the time stream triangulates their position.

Art

After vanishing from her impressive home, Lenore hangs out with tooth-shaped aliens wearing robes. Pooty slays Human gladiators wearing red-frilled golden helmets with his pitchfork, while women in robes and sashes lust over his bucket-head body. Ragamuffin races with Velociraptors through grasslands to leap upon unsuspecting prey. In the evening, the stuffed doll relaxes in a T-Rex skull and scratches his back with a crab on a stick beneath a starry blue sky.

Flashback Squirrel, who introduces the story, watches his family clash before his statue in Lenore: The Time War HC. Taxidermy, an Egyptian god with an insect head, protects the friends against the vengeful Time Goats. A character shaped like a crescent moon with a narwhal-worthy nose offers his help, but may not be as powerful as he claims.

Roman Dirge enhances the richly colored cinematic scenes with generously sized words in balloons, colored boxes, and backgrounds. Lenore: The Time War HC includes detailed panels, flash pages, and enormous double-page spreads. Yet, the lettering in this comic evokes a children's book. (Or perhaps a book that makes you think it’s a children’s book until you look inside). Sound effects help us hear roaring monster babies, shouting aliens, and a remark that makes an elder god cry. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Lenore: The Time War HC is a celebration of friendship, a guide to surviving interesting times, and a reminder to have fun regardless of what life throws our way.
