Everywhere she looks, death surrounds her. Then there are
the monsters that Dr Iker created. Dinah Lance agreed to protect billionaire
Reese Tyler from the Green Arrow. But that was only after Hector Hammond
threatened to cut off her father's cancer treatments.
Now, Hector Hammond has given Dinah's dad a death sentence.
One Green Arrow lies dead at her feet. But can another help Dinah escape Iker's
chamber of horrors? And is there still time to save her father? Let's leap into
Absolute Green Arrow #6, and see!
Story
When Hector Hammond caught them investigating his secret
genetics laboratory, he left Dinah Lance tied up with the Green Arrow. The
masked man mentioned Dinah's mother, but Hector's return silenced Green Arrow's
tongue. Then Hector removed the serial killer's mask. Suddenly, Dinah realizes
why Malcolm Merlyn, Hammond's chief of security, hired her to investigate the
Green Arrow murders. Yet when Malcolm dies, another Green Arrow pulls
his bow on her. And Dinah is not surprised.
In Absolute Green Arrow #6, Dinah discovers the identity of
the second person who posed as the masked serial killer. The Green Arrow fills
the gaps in Dinah’s knowledge. She learns how her discoveries enhanced the two
killers’ investigations. And Dinah gets another version of the
truth about the man she loved, even if he cheated on her and avoided his
responsibilities to pursue his dream.
Pornsak Pichetshote’s story is about endings. Yet it is also
about new beginnings. Just as Oliver Queen sought to accomplish two great
things before going to war to combat a great wrong, Dinah Lance must confront
her mother’s failure as a Star City Police Detective, and how it has affected
her life. The Second Green Arrow also has a painful past. But after combating
Hector Hammond and his billionaire buddies, not everyone sees the Green Arrow
as a villain. As the surviving Green Arrow makes friends to help him navigate
the future, Dinah Lance discovers others who can help her find her way forward.
Dinah, the Green Arrow, and others may wish Oliver had made
wiser choices. Still, Oliver Queen's struggle to empower people in an
oppressive world becomes a vision for others to follow in Absolute Green Arrow
#6.
Art
The Green Arrow clutches the handle of a throwing knife,
locking his two-sword bow together. He pulls back the string affixed to the
sword hilts, aiming a broadhead arrowhead at Dinah. A hood obscures his
features. Yet, he unmasks in the past. When the Green Arrow shakes his finger
at him, Oliver Queen clenches his fists. Then Ollie lifts a compound bow off a
wooden crate.
While a haze mutes the colors in the Green Arrow’s memory,
Dinah stands amid a storm of intense red in Absolute Green Arrow #6.
Light-green memories fill unconnected green puzzle pieces below the
confrontation. As Marcelo Maiolo applies a limited palette to Rafael
Albuquerque’s art, yellow, red, and green accompany characters as they consider
their options, act to protect others, and seek enlightenment. Yet blue
dominates two pages of this extra-long story when Dinah's iron-hard control
weakens.
Jeff Powell fills white dialogue balloons and boxes with
black and colored uppercase letters. Green Arrow's uppercase and Dinah Lance's
lowercase thoughts fill shaky green rectangles and yellow paper scraps. The
dialogue grows bold with intonation, shrinks for lowered voices, and enlarges
when voices rise. Sound effects amplify the battle for Green Arrow and Dinah
Lance's futures, while the silent climax shakes the Absolute Universe. Thanks
to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.
Final Thoughts
While she lived, her father struggled to live with his
wife’s betrayals. When the revelations following her mother’s death isolated
her, Dinah Lance sought a new life by taking out her anger on
others. Yet after hurting others as an MMA fighter, she decided to protect
people, even if they represented everything they despised. After years of
repressing her pain, Dinah discovers that working with others to forge a better future, even if they may
fail her, is the real superpower in Absolute Green Arrow #6.
